Why doesn't Luis Castillo of the Twins get more SB's? He is crazy fast. Almost all of his hits are in the infield, has 31 runs, and a batting average of .333. He currently has 3 sb.

Castillo does have speed and used to run when he was with Florida. He has over 300 career stolen bases but even when he was younger he had a high caught steeling rate. At almost 33 years of age now he has lost a step and doesn't run like he used to. The Twins feel it is better for him to get on base and have one of those big bats following him drive him home.

If you look at Luis Castillo while he was in Florida, towards the end of his run with Florida his stolen bases went down. This was because for the past few years he has been hampered by hamstring injuries. He is known for having knee problems as well and those two leg injuries put together can linger. Playing on turf half the time didn't help him any. He can still run, but has been cautious about it. Don't worry he can still grab the occassional steal and will hover around 20-25 per year for the rest of his career. Don't expect 40+ steals from him again.

You have to understand it is up to the coaches to decide for a steal. Most coaches don't send the runners. However, good catchers only throw the runners out 30% of the time. I do agree they should steal more.
