Evil. He intentionally starved millions of innocent Russians during the Russian Civil War by cutting off food shipments to areas where the Nationalists were popular. In terms of his totalitarian government, he wasn't as bad as Stalin, but he certainly wasn't good. Some people might defend him by arguing he was better than Nicholas II, but it is important to remember that he did not overthrow the Czar; he overthrew Kerensky's provisional government, which was moderate and democratic!

Vladimir Lenin was the most detestable human being this world has ever seen, bar none.
Judas Iscariot had NOTHING on him. At least Judas, within one day after his traitorous act, recognized what he had done and threw the money back before going out and hanging himself. Lenin took millions of lives and never had any remorse, not even on his deathbed.
The only reason Lenin supposedly wasn't as bad as Stalin was this--he didn't live long enough. He died at age 53, seven years into his revolution. Had he lived to be 74, as Stalin did, his conduct would have made Stalin's look angelic by comparison.

Incompetent. His peace treaty with Germany was a joke and a smart leader would have understood the repercussions of it (he was shot over it - he lived but was never the same).
He was an ideologue who did not understand humanity. He wanted to shape people to fit his image but the problem is that people will not be shaped and therefore ideology must reflect that.
On the other hand, I do grant him the fact that his record is incomplete and he seemed to be learning, and adjusting, on the job. He was moving away from ideology (he let the peseants keep their land and allowed them to, in essence, remain capitialistic so he could feed his people) and I think was probably a lot more open minded economically than given credit for. However Government-wise he was a dictator.
I just don't think Communism is realistic because it assumes all people are motivated by the same things which will never be true.

Great answer Richard C.
It is interesting that when studying the lives of Himmler, Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, one finds many commonalities. Driven, articulate, possessive, dynamic, uncompromising. The legacy of Lenin was saved by his death, for had he the time I am sure he would have racked up a body count as large if not larger than Stalins.

Brilliant, arrogant, cruel, power-hungry, hypocritical - as are most dictators.
He was undoubtedly clever in the way he used his country's enemies to back his powerplay during WW1 and the propaganda he put out inside Russia to justify his own ambition. But he was cavalier about the lives of ordinary people, who died in their millions because of the Russian revolution and policies of the Soviet system which he instituted.
however, he was outsmarted and murdered by Stalin, who had many of the same qualities but was even more evil and vicious than Lenin.

Good things, bad things, better men than me for what they accomplished.
I still strongly disagree with what they did, but they did a lot.
Socialism is the most unAmerican ideology we have in this country. I am a democrat. I am NOT a socialist.
They do not represent me. I am no longer silent while they attack my fellow Americans and try to divide us.
