My cat just brought one in and is battling with it, it looks absolutely evil. It is dark black and humongus by beetle standards, and has a wicked set of pinchers in the front. Any ideas what this is?

It also has six thick black legs that it uses to grab hold of things and stick

About an Inch and a half long or so? nasty looking sharp close to the head pinchers? *shudder* I think I saw the same thing earlier tonight.... ugh... I'm not scared of bugs, but I almost stomped the thing just because it was so.... mean looking... luckily I had some birthday cards it was crawling on, and I picked up the one it was on and admired it, but then it came running for my fingers... *shudder* luckily the treefrogs found it, I think it's gone now...

Too tired to try to find an image... all i know was the darn thing was all black, slender, as I said about an inch and a half long, and looked like a dang biter....

My guess would be a stag beetle.

Here's some pictures:
