Assuming that you're talking about the popularity of Audis in North America, and not Europe. Well, I own an Audi A6, and can speak from experience. There are quite a number of them here in the SF Bay Area and also in the Northeast Corridor of the US. Incidentally, they're quite popular in China - as executive cars for business folks and government officials, as they are assembled in China under a joint venture with First Automotive Works in China.
They don't have as much visibility/publicity as say BMWs. And their reputation may have suffered a bit many years ago with the that 60 Minutes segment about the transmission surge problem which was blown way out of proportion. So there is a bit of an esoteric-ness - which actually is pretty appealing, as they may not have the "glitziness" associated with Beemers, for example.
Audis are enjoyable cars to drive and enjoy in my estimation. Their interiors are very nice and appeal to the eye more than say a M-B or BMW (which are a bit more spartan-looking). Most of them are AWD (all wheel drive) which can be a preference for some drivers.
That said, unfortunately, they aren't cheap to maintain or service and I am speaking from experience though I haven't had anything really catastrophic. Though to be fair, overall they probably aren't any less reliable than Mercedes Benzes or BMWs.
On the other hand Audis depreciate faster than BMWs, which is a double edged sword - yes, they drop faster in value new, but you can buy them for less used.

From my perspective, maintenance and repair, they are over engineered, complicated, inaccessible, and expensive automobiles. Many other makes are just as nice to drive but easier to take care of.
