Children are all different. For some, either negative or positive reinforcement works, because they are sufficiently equipped to understand whatever communication they receive.

However, any child with special needs or disabilities, and some gifted children, only respond to positive reinforcement. Because it is effective with all types of children, positive reinforcement is far superior to negative reinforcement.

Additionally, the tables will turn soon enough. Most people will spend more time as oldsters at the mercy of their grown children than the children actually spent in childhood. Bitter memories of numerous (unnecessary?) negative situations make for ill-treatment or total abandonment of the elderly.
