I believe the colony of New Hampshire had a flag with a snake chopped in pieces, and the slogan on it. Each piece of the snake represented a colony. The slogan was meant to signify each colony was better off living freely together as one (America), than (death) being pieces of England.

"Live Free or Die" is the official motto of New Hampshire, adopted by the General Court in 1945. It is probably the most well-known of all state mottos, partly because it speaks to an aggressive independence inherent in the American dream, and partly because of its contrast to the mild sentiments usually found in such mottoes.

Probably based on Patrick Henry's famous speech. Give me liberty or give me death.
