You could say what the person above mentioned but you would be lying. I have had 30+ rats over the years and have found them to be the best pets. They are affectionate, intelligent, and clean.
They have a sense of self(self awareness) so they know who their people are, and will wait by the cage door for interaction and treats. They thrive on attention. Unlike hamster, in the wild they live in groups so they enjoy people(very much like dogs).
They are cleaner than cats(washing themselves- top to bottom 6x per day, cat only 2x)
When I got my first rat my mother and grandmother were against it. They said they would never like the idea of a rat in the house. Well, over time that changed, and I knew my grandmother was hooked when I caught her feeding them peanuts and talking to them through the bars of the cage.
You may nt want to hear this, but what your sister does is none of your concern. As I tell children I care for "Worry about you." You may think they are gross, but it is not your decision. You have the choice to stay away from the rat if you don't like it.

While wild rats do spread diseases, usually from the fleas on them rather than the rat themselves, domestic rats are actually very clean animals. They are fairly intelligent and can be affectionate pets.

Rats make wonderful pets. If you don't like them, don't go near it! :)

i own three males. they are fabulous. they come when they are called and are very dog like in their personalities. it is your sister's choice whether or not to get them. leave her be.

Some good reasons why not to get a rat, explain these to your sister
Rats ust sit there running in a cage, no human interaction at all!
It is hard to take care of, hard work no reward!
They smell bad
