Just living, working and getting ID in California is not enough. Read the residency information that is posted on the universities' web sites. For the University of California, for example, "an out-of-state student must have lived in California for more than one year preceding the residence determination date, relinquish residence in other states, show an intent to establish residency in California and demonstrate financial independence. Unmarried undergraduates from other states qualify as financially independent if they were not claimed by their parents or others as dependents for tax purposes for two preceding tax years and if their annual income is sufficient to meet their needs." I doubt that living with your aunt will demonstrate financial independence, and my guess is that your parents have been claiming you as a dependent.

Don't instantly assume that you can't afford an out-of-state college. My daughter attends an out-of-state college and got 51% of her (out-of-state) tuition in merit scholarships. You might also qualify for financial aid. Apply to the Calfornia school and then see what happens.

Usually you can't be considered a resident for educational purposes unless you have lived in the state a minimum of three years (otherwise every student would become a resident within a few months of coming to the state and the state would be spending taxpayer money to educate large numbers of out-of-state residents). Sorry.

You usually need to live somewhere for a year before you can get instate tuition. You need to apply for state citizenship as soon as you get there - get a drivers license, register your car there, register to vote, and you probably have some other forms to fill out. You can get them at the courthouse.

Remember, sometimes out of state colleges will give you in-state tuition from the beginning if you want to major in something that isn't offered at your own state colleges. Try looking into that first.
