I had a miscarriage last fall and did TONS of research afterward because I knew nothing before it happened.

A threatened miscarriage is one where you're starting to spot or bleed and your hormone levels aren't as high as they should be. Sometimes your body stabilizes and you go on to have a healthy pregnancy/baby and sometimes you do eventually miscarry. There's literally nothing a doctor or you can do under these circumstances except wait and hope.

A spontaneous (or natural) miscarriage is one where your body expels all of the tissue associated with the baby on its on. This is really common very early in pregnancy, before you even know you're pregnant. Many women who have a spontaneous miscarriage think their period just arrived later than usual.

A missed miscarriage is one where your baby is no longer viable. This is one of the reasons doctors like to get several hormone levels early in pregnancy. It's also the reason some doctors do ultrasounds during the first three months of pregnancy. Hormone levels should go up and keep going up until about the halfway point of pregnancy. By six weeks or so, the baby's heartbeat should be visible on an ultrasound. If the hormone levels aren't going up and/or there is no heartbeat (or there was a heartbeat and then at the next appointment there isn't one) but you haven't started bleeding, THAT's a missed abortion. The baby isn't alive anymore but your body hasn't gotten rid of it.
Depending on how far along a woman is, doctors will do one of three things. They can wait and see if her body will miscarry without help (sometimes that can take a couple weeks!). They can give her drugs which will cause her to bleed and expel the tissue. Or they can dialate her cervix and physically remove the tissue.

As a previous poster noted, the medical term is abortion, not miscarriage, as in missed abortion or spontaneous abortion.

A "missed abortion" also known as a missed miscarriage (miscarriage is not a medical term, medically all lost pregnancies are abortions) means that the baby is lost early on and rather than the body bleeding and flushing it out the fetal tissue is reabsorbed into the mother.

You may be thinkings of a natural abortion which is a late term miscarriage.
A spontaneous abortion, or miscarriage, occurs when a natural cause ends a pregnancy.

Yes it's a natural abortion more commonly known as a miscarriage. You can pass the baby while peeing and not even know.

You might be thinking of spontaneous abortion, which in simple term is miscarriage.

Missed abortion is when they screw up and you have a baby that can sometimes be physically and mentally disfigured and disabled.
