When I'm travelling, I use them a lot. It beats packing twice as many clothes on business trips. Also, some of the commercial laundries will have larger capacity machines than what I have at the house, allowing me to give the comforters a thorough cleaning before putting them away at spring. Finally, a lot of people do not have washers and dryers.

I go to the laundry mat even tho my apartment has laundry machines for us. The laundry machines at my apartment are $1.00 for wash and dry. At the laundry mat they are $.75 for wash and dry. So i don't mind going down the street to the local laundry mat to save $.50 cents a week, which is about $2 bucks a month. Sure it is not a lot but i also us the time going the the mat to catch up on reading or something. If i do the laundry at home then I'll most likely be in front of my computer doing this or something and not getting the smaller things done. So that is why i go the the mat even tho my place has a laundry room. Also when ever I need to do the laundry here someone is using it. GRRRRRR!!!

Last time I lived in an apartment, the vast majority of the tenants would not be caught dead in the apartment's laundry facility. Maybe that was because they were afraid the would actually be caught DEAD there. I also know a number of people that don't live in an apartment or have there own washer and dryer.

No offense, but your question is flawed. You assume that most people have their own machine, yet obviously people go to laundry mats or there wouldn't be so many. I agree that many people have their own machines, but the people who go to laundry mats are the people that don't or who have something to wash their machine can't handle or have a broken machine.

People who don't have their own machines or live in apartments? Can't you think of any more important questions? Oh and even though I own my own machine AND live in an apartment sometimes I go to wash my larger items, like comforters. Also, it is faster if you have alot of loads, because you can run more than one machine at a time.

Apparently there are plenty of people who do NOT have their own machines and live somewhere that doesn't have them either, or there wouldn't be so many laundromats and they wouldn't be so busy.
Occasionally, the people using them are there because their machines broke down and aren't fixed yet, or because they're washing some heavy item they don't want to wash in their own machine.

I go twice a year to the laundromat to wash all the comforters/heavy blankets in our house. The dry cleaners won't take down comforters and I pay half to wash the others myself.
