You get arrested, and get fined if you have under a certain amount of marijuana. You get a bigger fine, possible license revocation and jail time over a certain amount. in the U.S. if you have under an ounce of marijuana you're charged with a class B misdemeaner, meaning you probably have a fine, and a jail term for less than 90 days. If you have more than an ounce, it becomes a class C felony. Because it can be listed as Possession with intent to sell. This can end up being something like 5 years in prison. If you're going to smoke weed, just do it at home so that chances of you getting caught are less, that's what I do.

I knew someone who had pissed off someone while driving home from work. When he got home he went into the garage to smoke his usual 1/2 joint. Believe this or not the cop came to his house because the lady he pissed off called the police and arrested him right in his kitchen! It was a first offense and like an idiot he pleaded guilty and paid some fines & had to go to a mandatory drug program. Good thing they didn't know about how much he really had in the house - he would still be in jail 6 years later..... he he he

Depends on the amount and what state. In my state, it's like a speeding ticket if an ounce or less. If it's under a pound, you can usually plea bargain it down to simple possession. The fine in my state would be suspended for a first offense. Court costs would be about $47-87 depending on what court you are charged in.

in some states, they let you go with no fines if you are caught with tiny amount
if you are carrying bags of pot then you will be charged with felony with an intention to sell.
