It all depends on the health status of the baby, 32 weeks is pretty early, the lungs are more than likely not developed for life outside the womb. The earliest I have seen a baby be born and not need respiratory assistance was at 34 weeks, she didn't need to go to NICU, and got to room in with mom and go to the regular newborn nursery. They won't necessarily keep the baby until its due date, but until it is stable enough to go home without the assistance of medical personnel

they take in factors like the baby weight and development, the baby would most likely have to stay till about 35 or 36 weeks, to make sure there are no problems, but if by chance the baby came at 32 weeks and all looked well they may keep it just a few days longer and then send you all home. My Dr. told me that due dates aren't always correct so they judge on many factors of the development of the baby to determine if it is premature

I believe its until they reach a certain weight if they arent having any other probs. I think the weight is 5 lbs as long as baby is able to maintain its own body temp, nurse or bottle feed with no probs, and no other health issues such as jaundice (which is treatable with the light therapy) because of the prematurity.
