Is it just a fashion thing, every woman wants to look her best or does it reflect a secret desire to be white or something. ive been having a debate about this with a friend who "loves the way God made her."

If we use your logic any white woman who gets a poodle perm longs to be black. Women change their hair, that's what we do.

NO it is not a sign of self hate... I think that is ridiculous lol I am not thinking about looking white when I get my hair straightened, and I am getting styles that black women get not white women... as for weaves I don't wear them but that is not self hate either it is just a different look some

I think they relax their hair so that it can be straight. Since they complain about their hair being extremely hard to comb and let alone brush. It seems resistant to water.

From what I have read in their Ebony magazine, they wear weaves as a fashion statement, but those who wear their hair natural believe that the majority of black women wear weaves because they wish they had straight, long, silky hair like the rest of the diverse females here in America.

I also think it is self hate, because they seem to only wear wigs, extentions, and overly, exaggerated long, silky, straight weaves which looks so unnatural and fake. It's ok to wear a weave or a wig for certain occasions, but all the time is ridiculous.

The women on my job wear alot of weaves and wigs and tell us that it is because they do not like their own hair and wish they were born with long, straight hair. No one's ever satisfied.

White women tan to make their skin as dark as black women.

White women are now getting booty implants and lip injections

I don't know any black women who bleach their skin and get surgeries to make their asses as small as white women and their lips smaller.

So what's the big fuss about Black women relaxing their hair and wearing weave?

NO ONE in Hollywood actually wears their real hair.

You think all of that length belongs to Jessica Simpson and Lindsay Lohan? No. They wear more hair than Beyonce does.

Why do we get called out for wanting to wear our hair a certain way, and they don't get called out for wanting to change the way that their body is made?

Not only Black women tend to have kinkier hair. Have you ever seen a person of full Polynesian (Hawaiian, Fijuan, Samoan) descent?

Their hair is coarser than ours. I've seen so many Samoan women who rock perms and weaves, that it's not even funny.
I'm half Black and my hair is a hundred times straighter than my cousins of full Samoan descent.
Why is it that when a Black woman has hair below her earlobes, everyone assumes that she wears weave?

If it's not your hair, then why the hell do you care?

We're gonna do what we want anyways.

I don't think its an issue to be sensitive over. I mean, I am of German, Irish, English descent, and I have wavy dark brown hair. It is not in my genetic makeup to have blonde hair, red hair or blue hair, but at different times my hair has been those colours! And when I see someone with ringlets in their hair, I wish I could have that, too (at least for a while). I love the way God made me, but he gave me a brain and creativity, as well as a physical appearance. Sometimes my God-given creativity is reflected in how I look.

No it's a sign that curly, frizzy hair is a pain in the butt. I'm Hispanic and I have straightened my hair because my face gets lost in all that hair. Just like when white women curl their hair it is not self-hatred. People should not read too much into trivial things. Tell your friend that is great that she "loves the way God made her", but she is not everyone- she should allow them to have their own fashion issues. Life's too short.

This is as ridiculous as when some of these ppl ask if white women who go to tanning beds are trying to look black.....you can't always have the same style; they just wanna change up the look....tan don't equal black and straight hair don't equal white
.

I think for a significant portion it is, I think a lot would not even consider going natural

But I also think that some just like their hair like that but I do want to see more black women with their natural hair, then they will see that they don't need weave to have long hair

no im a black woman i dnt relax my hair but i put weav on from time to time my reason is that when your hair is afro its quit hard to look after it when u r busy with day to day life so i put weav in but i have nice thick afro hair that i am proud of.
n i show it off as well

you can also put weav on when u want to chang your look with out taking the risk of damging your hair or cutting it.

OMG, you've got to be kidding. Black women, such as myself, have no problem being black and have no desire to be white. Do white people want to be black when they put collagen in their lips or perms in their hair? Being white is not all that fantastic I'm sure or there wouldn't be so many people 'acting black' . Get a grip on yourself. Black is Beautiful. This is 2007 not 1907
