Of course.
I once read that the only way to free yourself is through giving up want. To not want things, covet what our neighbor has, wish we had something we see on TV, would be true happiness.
Think about it: if you didn't have to have that new car or plasma TV wouldn't that mean you were content. And contentment means happy. I guess the last one is my own definition of free which is:
free=happiness.
When your truly happy with the things around you I think you'll be free. It's defiantly not easy as I've been trying. I guess part of the happiness is finding it.

I think all people should have control over themselves. If you ever do, you'll see how great it makes you feel to be your own person and not trying to be a people pleaser. Years ago I read an article by Carol Burnett and she said, just say "no" to people when you don't want to do something...force yourself once and each time after that it gets easier and you don't feel pressure and unhappiness within yourself. Don't go to the extremes of being nasty about it, just be honest. Honesy usually works. If you just say, I really don't want to do that, or I don't feel like doing that today, people will be put off at first but they have no real reason to be mad at you because you were honest about it. They will eventually see that and respect you for it and not take advantage or assume you'll do anything they want you to do.

A person who is always trying to control different situations, whether its by controlling the people around them, or the things around them are certainly not free. They are too preoccupied with themselves to allow themselves to be free.
I think that in order to be free, a person needs to allow themselves to accept that they can never know what will happen next. Accept that every minute in life is unpredictable.
Only then you can be free.
Anyway, the truth is, we can never avoid uncertainty.

The definition of being "free" is "the power to act or speak or think without externally imposed restraints". If a person lacked control over themselves there would be externally imposed restraints, and therefore by definition you could not be free.
As a side note, I also personally believe that a person could lack freedom by being subject to internally imposed restraints, such as those caused by mental deficiencies. For instance, I would not consider a person who is unable to control his thoughts due to schizophrenia to be "free"

Yes. If a person isn't in control of themselves, their decisions and their opinions then they cannot be free....physically or mentally. Self control means the person is capable of making important choices for themself and live their own life in their own way.

Physically, yes. But mentally, no. No matter the oppression or tyrant, you're mind is your own.
