It's all about the LCF, or Looking Cool Factor.

Really fat rear tires give you better straight line acceleration, since you can use more power. But they make really poor handling bikes, they're quite prone to falling over apparently.

usually, choppers are hard tails. meaning, they dont have rear shock absorbers. i belive u'd have a better ride with a wide tire than a skinny 1...unless u have an iron azz.

Like every thing else about a chopper, it's for looks.

not all choppers do. its just preference and style, and the more common thing to do.

To make up for the fat wide thing the owners don't have in their pants.

the chopper design you see would look stupid with a skinny tire.

well, i don't know a whole lot about bikes but i love import cars, and the wider the tire the more traction and stability you get. plus they look good. at least to me they do.

its a fad right now, but the wide tire does help the bike grip the road better with the large displacement engines in them

Generally, to accomodate the fat, wide rear ends of their riders... ;-)
