This is the most effective way for the major political parties to suppress the up and coming alternative parties! Can't allow any competition to sneak in there!

Because in the Primaries each party is choosing its candidate for the general election. It doesn't make any sense to have one party being part of the selection committee (so to speak) for the other party.
I know there are states that have open primaries, but I think that is just stupid for the reason I stated, above.

That's just the way it's done . . . You have to elect a nominee for your registered party. That's how you/they elect a nominee. Then you can vote for whomever you like (regardless of party) in the general election.

Each state has their own laws about that. If you don't like it, move to a state that allows you to choose whichever party you want to vote for, or go to Louisiana, where they all appear on one big ballot.
Or work to change your state's laws.
