The brightest star in the sky is Sirius which shines at magnitude -1.47. Jupiter can be as bright as -2.8 magnitude and Mars can be as bright as -2.9 magnitude but Venus is ALWAYS the brightest object in the sky after the Sun and rhe Moon, varying between magnitude of -3.8 and -4.6.

The only exception to this is when there is an especially bright comet or supernova around for a few weeks. Comet MacNaught peaked at magnitude -6 in January 2007 but rapidly became dimmer, once past its peak.
