Caucasian and whites have an advantage in life?

Question

In my Sociology class we were talkin about races and stuff and my professor said that Caucasian people have a distinct advantage in every aspect of their life in the United States. She is a Caucasian herself and she said "Especially in the dating world and the nightlife"

I couldn't comprehend what she meaant

Most of my classmates seemed to agree (about 23 outta 30 of us thru a show of hands by her statement)

IS that somewhat true? How??

I think that she is right, whether that's good or bad.

Just under 70% of the United States population is made up of caucasians. That right there is a big factor in why they have a huge advantage in 'dating and nightlife'. What that means is if (hypothetically) you walk into a club and 100 people are there - 70 people are white. That gives you a much wider variety and increases your chances of finding a date.

And for what she is saying I have this: everyone is always proud of themselves. Especially molders of minds (teachers) who have been taught to be objective, while it's human nature to do what your told not to.

That's an interesting conversation at a bar or party, but it appears to be an uninformed statement on behalf of your teacher.

I could find no polls or data discussing any aspects of social "advantage" that shows a general advantage to a given race. Nothing that shows significant difference racially in sex life, social "success", or contentment in American social society. Perhaps her sources are better, but I doubt it, since she relied on a class "poll" to validate her claim instead published data.

"Teachers" have a responsibility to teach facts, not unsupported opinion, urban myth, or short-sighted observation. Next time a "teacher" blurts out something like that, ask for evidence so you can evaluate the validity of the source. Next time you see that particular teacher, tell her that as a teacher whose salary YOU are paying, you'd appreciate that she teach confirmed truth (or at least supported theory), and not simply serve up rumors and suppositions as facts. If she doesn't, contact the Dean and ask for your tuition money back!

If you live in Canada Caucasians dont really have a whole lot of advantages unless ofcource your rich but the average white person has to struggle more it seems than every other race, others get compansated when they live or move here our government like to give others money

I am white, so take it with a grain of salt, but I would generally agree.

I was walking with a white friend by a store and the alarm was going off. The police pulled up right when we were walking away and they drove right around us and to the store. I always wondered if they would have done that if we had been darker.

We live longer, are healthier, get paid more, get punished less for the same crimes, etc...

I'm not saying those are good things, but in this country, they are facts.

the answer to your question may lie in two explanations that are equally relevant.
One: race is intricately connected with power. it's not just a matter of genetic color that may deem some exotic and others mundane. race is but one aspect of the many elements of a power apparatus that is material in its very being historico-political construction. and where are we talking about? the US, which is a settler colony founded by white european settlers who exterminated the natives and coerced the africans to come to build the wealth that we today call capitalism.
Two: the white power dynamics cannot function only in terms of coercion, but does need to become also operative ideologically. in other words, the popular stereotyping of some as cool, as thugs, as drug addicts, or as anything else. turn on your tv: who are the icons of success? white people; and when they throw in a brown or black person, it is to say that success can also be achieved by emulating whiteness not only necessarily being white oneself. think of the myths that exist in many cultures: what is the usual prototype of beauty? more often than not, blondness. and yes, our tastes and their socializations can be very racist for sure.

Just type" white privilege" in Google and get educated on the reality of this country.
It's refreshing to hear your White professor admit this. A lot of white people know this but will never admit it to anyone but themselves.

Ask yourself this: If they were to turn Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, and Big Bird into human beings what ethnicity would you assume they'd be in your heart of hearts?

Personally yes I do think white has more advantage unfortunately. My brother is indian and my sister is half black and I see them struggle all the time. Im white and I dont struggle nearly as much. But if you go to other parts like africa maybe its different. thats the way life is. it sucks

In the US and the West, it may be true but if you go to Africa or Asia, they may prefer their own people for jobs and dating. I think people in every country give preference to their own kind of people in most of the things.
