Since Colinc has not answered yet Ill try to help. I dont know what your question was before or what equipment you are using so ill start from the beggining.

Since you state that if you connect to the router then you get internet connection then that tells me you have the router configured to your ISP correctly.

Im also going to have to assume you have not been able to connect to the router yet wirelessly with or without wireless security on.

So, connect your laptop to the router using a ethernet cable. Log into the routers setup, usually by typing the routers IP address into a web browser. The IP address is usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 and then input the username and password to get into the router.

Find the Wireless section of the routers setup.
-There might be a enable/disable or on/off setting for the wireless radio. Turn it on.
-In the SSID field name your routers wireless. This is the name you will see on your laptop when looking at available wireless networks.
-Enable DHCP
-Disable Wireless Security. This will be the WEP/WAP settings. Dissable this until you get the wireless working.
Save all the settings and your router might reboot.

Now unplug the laptop from the router and make sure the laptops wireless radio is turned on.
Goto control panel and open the network connections.

Right click on your wireless network connection and select View Available Wireless Networks. You should see the name of your wireless router, the name you put into the SSID box earlier.

Select it and hit connect. After a few seconds or a min it should connect. There you go......

Now to set the wireless security:

You dont need to connect using wires now. Open a browser window and type the routers IP address again and log into the routers setup.

Goto the wireless section and this time enable the wireless security, either WEP or WAP. Then in the security key field you will need to enter a numeric password.

The save the settings, the router will reboot and you will loose the wireless connection. Go back to the Available Wireless Networks and again connect to your wireless network. This time it should prompt you for a security key. Enter the security key exactly how you did in the router and hit connect. You should be connected now.

Hope that helped.....

go into your router while plugged in through the interface

should be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (put in IE address bar)

enter in your username and password

go to the encryption tab and give it a password

then you can go wireless by entering in the same key and others won't be able to log on.
