My pc gets infected with malware and so far the junk keep coming back. My concern right now is to change/update the host file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc), but without success even under safe mode. The access is denied and it complains of being used by another process. (how can that be even under safe-mode?)
Anyone know how please? Help is so appreciated :)

Also, my cd-rom cannot be detected under "my
computer". I suspect it was due to those malware. That's the other problem.

PS. thanks all for giving me answers :)

Some malware may have corrupted or blocked host file access. You'll need to get the nasties out of there before trying to fix the host file.

Both the first two are good suggestions, though you can also install the Command Recovery Console to Windows XP, and here is how.

Find your installation media, open a command prompt and navigate to :\i386\ and type the following command 'winnt32 /cmdcons' (without quotes). This will install a new option selectable at start up that say Command Recovery Console. Select this, follow the onscreen instructions, then navigate to the directory containing the hosts file and delete it. Type exit, this will reboot your PC. When Windows reboots, if the hosts file is not recreated automatically, create your own, the only entry that needs to be in there is '127.0.0.1 localhost'.

Sounds pretty bad, you sure the file is not set to hidden etc. ??
If you can, download a copy of Avast Home from www.avast.com, install it, choose to scan when restart and let it do the business of removing the hardcore trojans first.
