General Ulysses S Grant was that rarity among Union Generals, he got things done. Whereas other Generals wasted time making absolutely positively certain their forces were ready for battle and were never quite ready to face the carnage of war, General Grant got things done, ordering his troops to attack. Subsequently Grant was among the bloodiest of Generals, losing lots of soldiers in the process of hammering out a victory.

Grant was not the brightest or the most brilliant of generals but unlike the vast number of Generals on either side of the aisle, Grant learned from mistakes made and made every effort to improve his tactics. Grant got better with each battle and was seemingly unaffected by disaster, while other Generals fell apart after every little set back and
became timid & afraid, Grant got back in the saddle and said "do it again." Grant was like a punch drunk fighter who refuses to stay down on the canvas.

And he was Drunk most of the time. Which may have helped Grant get the image of mangled dead soldiers out of his mind. Grants greatest asset as a General was in his willingness to delegate authority (it could also get him in trouble), wars are won by organization, by having subordinates deal with the small details while the commanding General concentrates on the big picture.

General Grant combined strategic vision with tactical brilliance. Grant was a humble sort, no aristocrat, actually quite slovelny and Earthy, he had a crude charm that inspired the soldiers serving under him even when he was ordering them to face certain death. Grant's men were willing even eager to fight, and that is crucial to winning wars.

To sum things up. Grant got things done. He did not hesitate in the face of appalling losses.Grant learned from mistakes. Grant was a sound strategist and a solid tactician. Grant inspired his men, earned their respect & loyalty and wielded the forces in his command with steadfast determination.

"""After some minor operations in Mississippi he was given charge of all the armies in the West and raised the siege of Chattanooga and sent Sherman to raise that of Knoxville. That winter he was appointed to the re-created grade of lieutenant general and given command of all the Union armies. He also received the thanks of Congress. Making his headquarters with George G. Meade's Army of the Potomac, he hammered away at Lee - the devout follower of jomini - in his Overland Campaign. Despite heavy losses at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, Grant kept going. His attack at the latter was one of two movements he wished he had never ordered (the other was at Vicksburg). Swinging south of Richmond he besieged Petersburg and after a 10-month siege took both cities. Pursuing Lee to Appomattox, he had virtually ended the war. Meanwhile, the other armies under his direction had torn the Confederacy apart. ""

"""As the fierce battles of the Civil War continued, some began to question General Grant's military leadership. At Shiloh, Grant fought one of the bloodiest battles in the West. Some called for him to be replaced. President Lincoln fended off demands that Grant be removed by saying, "I can't spare this man — he fights." (From the Ulysses S. Grant home page.)

With President Lincoln's support, Grant was determined to move ahead to victory. He captured Vicksburg, the key city on the Mississippi River, which cut the Confederacy in two. He then broke the Confederate hold on Chattanooga, Tennessee. """

From day one, stalemate possibly, however with much more death. Just a reminder, if Lee had no longer ordered Picket's cost and had withdrawn early from Gettysburg, he would have behind schedule the battle a couple of extra months and in that point Lincoln might have permit the south pass. He was once getting such a lot hate from moms over the demise toll, he was once approximately to provide it up. Really unhealthy facet is that Lee attacked Gettysburg motive his troops wanted the footwear there, however the Governor of NC had greater than adequate and simply refused to proportion with any person however his state squaddies.
