Why do some parents named their kids such boring names, even though there are such a variety of cool names to choose from? Why would you just name your kid (no offense) something like Mary, when there's nothing original about that name?

I completely agree I like Eden, Sunrise, and Aubrie, not crazy, just a little different from Jessica, Dana, Sophie, Beth, etc.... I hate dull, common names like that (mine is Dana, so don't be offended, mine is dull too) My husband likes names like Sarah and Ann, BLEH!

well with all the "original" names out there right now they may be the only Jennifer in their class. I haven't met a Jennifer yet that is under 10. I have met about 4 Payton's (various spellings) out of the 13 kids in my daughters ballet class. So what was common and boring for us growing up isn't used as much. Names go in cycles.

Also Shiloh may of been made popular by whoever that actress and her hubby is (really don't follow) but it is actually a very old and biblical name.

Cool names are great, but then you don't want to go too far with that cause you know how kids are at school....they find a way to break it down and tease you no matter what the name is. And then there's always the risk of the child hating that name and thinking it's parents were on drugs or at a hippie revival convention when they chose the name.

I think some people take original and take it too far. Then there are the chiche trendy names that just make you cringe. I think Hunter is my most hated name. It is not a name, it's a job description. UGH.
Far out names that children will hate their parents for: Wolfgang, Apple, Brooklyn, HOMER!!! Why do celebrities think that their fame gives them license to torture their kids with names that would get them beat up in a regular school.
Yes, there are some ho-hum names like say Courtney but in the end ... I think I'd rather have a plain name that sounds respectible when you put say Dr. or Pres. in front of it than something that sounds like my parents were high when they named me.

My dad's cousin has been an elementary school teacher for years, and she wanted to give her kids names that were unique. So, she and her husband decided that they wouldn't use any name for their kids that had also belonged to any of the children that she'd taught. They now have a Mary, a Tommy, and a Molly. Those are "normal" names, but do you know anyone who has one of them (especially a child)? These days, it's the "unique" Mackaylas and Oliviyas and Sidonies who end up having the unoriginal names, and the Marys who end up being one-of-a-kind. So, that's why she named the kids the way she did. Also, Tommy was named after his dad.

Many of those names are family names and the parents want to honor grandparents, etc.
Plus, I think Mary is a very pretty name. Just because you think it's boring, doesn't mean everyone thinks it's boring. And in this day and age, Mary is not original. How many one year olds do you know named Mary?

Well i dont like names like Katherine, Joshua, Brian, Travis, David etc.
I like older names that have decreased in popularity since the early to mid 1900's.
I like Lilly, Daisy, Ava, Audrey etc.
I like Gavin, James (hasnt really decreased in popularity i just like it) Jack, Rowan, Sam etc. Unique names are ok its just that the names today are kind of trendy and 10 yrs ago they looked stupid and 10 years from now they will look stupid. Names like Agatha you would probly not name your kid now even though it was popular 70 years ago, but a name thats less Trendy like James and William, will never look stupid. If you get my drift. Im tired of names like Aliyah and Ryelle, Nolee and Rayne. They are cute nick names but will not look cool if they end up being Dr. Nolee or watever. So it might be a good idea to give a child w/ a unique name a more traditional middle name so they have something to fall back on. Also, you can give more traditional names unique nick name so that when the child grows out of his dated, cutey name, he can go on to using William or w/e. I dont like mary, sounds like a homley girl, but Ryelle or Nolee sounds like a superficial s l u t. No offense but thats just how i see it, im not old either, im young.

Not everyone wants to be "original" or have something that will cause their child to be picked on when they are growing up (hence why so few peoples' names are Seymour Buttz, Harry Heine, Lucifer, Pirate, Coco Cox, etc.) (Coco Cox sounds like a cereal: I'm coo-coo for Coco Cox!)

Many people pick names to honor a family member (e.g. naming their daughter Mary after their Grandmother whom they loved very much and raised them) or a close family friend (best buddy Joey saved Dad from that train when they were kids, so Dad has named his kid to honor his friend), or maybe to honor a relative who has passed (I gave my child my dad's middle name to honor him because his grandson will never have the chance to meet him).

And still others pick names simply because they like them. It's also easier on your child to name them something simple and traditional (a three year old can pronounce Emma but they probably can't pronounce something like Devilance).

And many people simply like traditional names, hence their popularity. Why else would Joe, Matt, and Josh be so popular year after year, yet Everest, Macintosh, Plaxico, and Yancey are so rare.

Family tradition may be more important than originality to some. Seems alot of parents are focusing on being different rather than going with tradition. Mary is a very biblical and symbolic name. AS is David, Mark, Joseph, etc.

What's with the Skyrocket, Apple, Destiny, etc. Alot of stripper names nowadays if you ask me?
