Basically at the back of the hp7850 printer is what looks like a usb port but is more square! It also has a funny fork like symbol next to it-I'm guessing this is where I would connect to my laptop(samsung r40), but what is the correct cable and where can I get one????

You can get them at any Electronic store, Fry's if available in your area, they sell them the cheapest, it's called Printer USB port, instead of a standard USB port, well that's what I call it.
