First thing to do is to call the welfare office. Cali and NY are practically populated entirely by people who wanted to be on the big screen. If you do not have some sort of backup plan you better hope to marry rich or learn to like Ramean noodles.

I know it's your dream and you love it but you have to eat too. I'm sure I'll be getting thumbs down like crazy for this one but reality has to enter somewhere.

A cousin supported herself for 20 years acting on and off Broadway (although she is not a household name); a niece just graduated from college with a major in drama, and a childhood friend is a movie director/producer, so here is my take on a very difficult career choice:

---Take drama classes if they are available as an elective or participate in your community's Little Theater. Make sure that you learn about all aspects of acting, including the work that goes on behind the scenes.

---See as much live theater as possible--both professional and non-professional.

---Take voice and dance and learn to play a musical instrument. Understand that if you stick with these lessons, you will have to sacrifice some of the social life you might have otherwise.

---Develop some practical talents as well both inside and outside the theater world since you may have to work as a office assistant or in food service while waiting for your next acting job, and/or you may end up in lighting or special effects. This means graduating from college with a dual major (you will need a backup plan).

---Get professional experience as soon as possible.

---Understand that in a field often based on good lucks and youth, very few people make it into the big time. As a woman also realize that your acting career will be shorter than a man's unless you market yourself as a character actress.

Take acting classes for the next 10 years.
Also, join the Community Theater in the city where you live.

Call them and ask the procedure for auditioning.
Most actors do NOT make a living as an actor. It's very difficult, they drop out when they, realistically, see how hard it is to be an actor.

As the saying goes: many are called, but few are chosen.

Stop looking at it as a dream and start looking at it as a career because those are two different things. There are over 1 million actors out there pounding the pavement everyday and none of them will take you seriously when you post questions about how it's your dream because to them it's life. Be proactive and read plays and books on acting. Don't just wait for someone to stumble upon you because it will never happen. You need to create the opportunities for yourself and know your stuff. The hardest working actors aren't always the best known ones.
