It's large, about the size of a tarantula spider, but it is an insect (6 legs and 3 body parts) with antennae, and appears to have a shell-like body, but not a cockroach. It has a large head and body & the legs are kind of short, by proportion. Its brown with subtle kind of striped pattern in its body. It's pretty ugly to me.

Can anyone help me figure out what this insect is?

Beats the heck out of me, but two things might help:
1. Where did you find this?, and
2. A photo (not that your description wasn't good - it was, but it doesn't remind me of anything I've ever seen)

I don't know...but I'm still reeling from the fact that there is someone out there who knows the plural of antenna is antennae and how to spell it...

Water Roach, not the science name for it, but sounds like a Water Cockroach, or Water Roach.
