If a compass was set exactly on top of the north pole, what would the compass read?

It would point to the magnetic north

As of June 2, 2007, a compass at the geographic North Pole would point south (of course!) along the 163° West meridian. That's roughly in the direction of Nome, Alaska.

A compass placed at the *magnetic* north pole, if allowed to swing freely, would point straight down.

It would point South, but would be pointing at the magnetic pole position somewhere in North Eastern Canada.

toward magnetic north, however if you WERE at magnetic north, the compass would either not move if stationary or spin like a top if moving enough

It will simply keep turning around if you are located at the magnetic pole, if you are situated at the real pole, it will point down to it...
