The enlightnment was the period in time right after the renaissance when more and more people began to use scientific methods to discover the mysteries of the universe and not just rely on the bible and superstition. In addition to scientific discovery, the idea that all men were created equal and the whole idea that a priveledged aristocracy should even exist first came into common discussion. The framers of the constitution were influenced by this and wrote the constitution with the idea of protecting individual rights... We hold these truths to be self evident that all men possess the uninalienable right to life, liberty and the persuit of happiness. That flys in the face of the landed aristocracy back in Europe. The US was seen as a kind of philisophical experiment in Europe. It inspired many revolutionaries and political activists there. It was also the inspiration forthe French Revolution. Hope that answers your question.

The enlightenment had many philosophers that stressed the rights of the individual over the divine rights of kings. Philosophers like Voltaire and John Locke were read by Jefferson and Hamilton, and they put these thoughts into practical rules in the constitution.
