Have already replaced-
distributor sender unit ( as advised by the AA)
Distributor
Carburettor

Problem is not fuel starvation.
It will start then run a little while then it just fades away but will usually start again straight after.
Any ideas ?

timing on the car could have just moved a bit and causeing it to die. get the timing check and the timing belt tension also check the distributor cap to see if the carbon stickes are all in good order and the rotor arm is in good order get the condenser unit checked as well.also check spark plug leads to see if theres any cuts, metal showing, burns, chips.check for vacume

test to see if sparks have constante spark by unpluging a sparkplugs (one at a time) and putting it on the cylinder head rocker cover.test it for 3min per spark plug. you should see good sparks. if you do see sparks but they not constant(they apper then theres nothing there) it be you distributor or coil faulty or both

did the aa man check your fuel pump if he did not then check it .only if its an electric pump you do the sussgestion below
you need to lift up your back seat and your find fuel pump and sender unit theres two cables that run in to it .you need to see which one if live and negative borrow multi meter probe into the wires and leave ignition on and see what voltage comes out.should be 12v if it is less than 12v then you pump is away but test it with the engine on as well.give the test a least 10minutes with engine on.if its a machanical pump just change it

theres another test you can do that is to see if the petrol comes out from the tank unscrew the feed fuel line(it should be next to the carburettor/machanical fuel pump or injection system rubber hose)then get someone to start the car and see if fuel comes out,if not then fuel pump is faulty or fuel filter blocked or fuel pipes are blocked.
after trying the sussgestion above it should be one of them or more them .the problem should be fixed

If the problem isn't with fuel, it must be in the spark and/or air flow. Check for a clogged air filters, bad plug wires/plugs/distributor cap and rotor, and make sure the alternator is putting out enough power. Those Fords also had a problem with the ignition modules...get a service manual and check each lead for the proper voltage.
Also...are you SURE it's not fuel? Test the fuel pump for proper pressure...a worn fuel pump would cause the symptoms you describe.

It could be a fuel tank problem. Moisture in the tank can cause that symptom, but so could a lot of other things. It could also be the pollution sensor or a fuel injector problem.
