Dont forget the compaction of soil. when you cut the hole you will get a fluff factor of material x 1.5 (called bank yards) when you fill the hole again and compact you will use material x .85 (called fill yards) if this is a real world question (your going to haul off the surplus your truck will need to haul the bank yards. if your going to fill the hole with concrete, you will need more material for consolidation purposes.
