I have an account that I hardly ever use anymore. The money in the account was very low, up until I got a letter in the mail stating that there had been a deposit of almost $12,000. I have no idea where the money came from, but it has been in there for almost a month now. I spoke with several people and no one knows exactly what to do about the situation. My mom occassionally deposits money in my account, but never that much. If it was their mistake, wouldn't they have caught it by now? What should I do?

Tell them the truth. Ask for a copy of the deposit to see exactly where it came from. Just telling them nothing could get you in trouble if you took the money out.

Take the letter to the bank. Tell them you want to find the source of the deposit since you do not recognize it. Hint: if it's not your money, it's not your money and you will sooner or later have to give it back anyway. So don't get yourself in a bind and spend money that's not yours and then have to return it.

I think you need to talk to the bank as nice and as tempting it is to keep the money.
Maybe a family member really did deposit the money for you.
I beleive in Karma and if the money is meant to be for you it'll still be after you talked to the bank.
Find out how the money got deposited.

You should notify the bank. I work for a bank, and if it was something done in error, and you spend it, you'll have to pay the money back. I had a customer who had a social security check deposited into his account on accident, and he spent the money...long story short, he ended up going to jail cause he knew the money wasn't his and he spent it. Its kinda like stealing. Let them know, and they can research it. Honesty is the best policy! :-)

It was likely a tax return from someone over paying their taxes (Like a business) and the wrong bank number was written down.. If you spend that money, you'll likely go to jail. I'd contract the familiy members and ask, if they didn't do it, go to the bank and settle the problem. Definaitly do not spend it.

A letter? Not a bank statement?
That sounds like a scam. You're going to get another letter asking you to write someone a check for $10000, and you can keep the $2000 for your trouble. Don't do it.

Tell the bank and have them trace where it came from, just in case someone is using your account to launder money...

You don't want to have to explain to the DEA why you have drug money in there that isn't yours, do you? All deposits and withdrawls over $10,000 are automatically reported.

Call them and have them sort out what happened.
