I am tired of the uninformed claiming the Patriot takes your freedoms away from you. A local Police Dept. can get a search warrant for your home from an anonymous tip easier than the F.B.I. can invoke the Act. The Patriot Act has so many safe guards built into it. It is being used appropriately and for the intention that Congress passed it. It has stopped many planned attacks on us. The news stations today said there are dozens of planned attacks being monitored by law enforcement using the Act. The planned attack on the Sears Tower was foiled because of the Act. Good for them. I'm glad it's there as a needed tool for those that protect us. I've yet to see a person that complains about it name one freedom they have lost because of it. If an attack is again successful when the Act expires they will complain because no one stopped it after you remove the tools they need to do so. To use the Act it must go before a Judge within an allotted time frame. It is designed to allow for quick action to determine a threat.

I don't have a problem with wire taps as long as a judge signed off on a warrant. I'm sorry if you have a problem with the government having to follow the constitution but there is no reason they can't protect the citizenry and still follow the law.
By the way, what specific impact did the Patriot Act have on this case? From what I have read it had none.

And you know what would have happened if the Patriot Act hadnt been there?
They would have gone to a judge and legally obtained permission to have those wiretaps. Its not the issue of wiretapping thats the problem, is the issue of incredible government secrecy and violation of the Constitution.
We have a right to privacy. Before the Patriot Act that privacy could be violated only when the FBI or the NSA could prove that there was a reason to violate it. Reasonable proof that something illegal was happening. They had to ask permission.
Now they can listen in on anyone, anywhere, anytime, without anyone controlling what they do and no oversight whatsoever. You honestly think thats reasonable? That sounds like something out of the old Soviet Union, not the USA. What are we becoming??

Do you even know what the patriot act is?? It is more than just wire taps. It gives the government to search any home in America without any suspected wrong doing by a person. Unfortunately the Bush government took the patriot act and added in their own causes at the 11th hour. It is a fact that the white house changed the patriot act at 3am the day of the vote by congress. Congress voted on it without knowledge of the changes. This has NEVER happened in the history of the American government.
Even the congressmen (republicans) that worked on the original patriot act was outraged at the white house trick. Now read all thousand of pages in the next 6 hours at get back to me on it. Sorry impossible?? That what your white house did to congress.

On contrary, I at least, think it is very effective. An absolute state is probably the safest state to live in and I mean that with all seriousness.
Yet what I disgree with is or was its permenant status. Form fits function - if the US is the balance its freedoms with security, it cant solidify an Act that is permanantly in place.

You're only stating your own misguided opinion that all liberals are against wiretapping in all cases. Why are you trying to turn this into a politically divisive thing? Don't you believe in agencies working together? Or do you think only conservative operatives worked on the case? Wake up!

"And for your info, I was watching Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC. They all stated that wiretaps were used since January 2006 to gather information on these terrorists."
---well this is your problem. most media is always wrong. Fox News is ALWAYS wrong. they are all being paid off! Download and watch OUTFOXED, please!!!
And for the record, I dont believe the patriot act has done anything but torn our right to privacy to shreds. This is AMERICA remember, the country with the most freedoms!! well, it used to be...

i am all for wiretapping to catch terrorists and their plots, but i see no reason it can't be approved by the courts first. That is what our form of gov't is all about, checks and balances.

Short answer:
Yes.
Being willing to die for freedom, being willing to die for THIS country, means being willing to die in a terrorist attack for the sake of not giving up your freedom. You don't have to be in the military for that. You don't have to fight a war for that. The real freedom fighters, the real heroes of the "war on terror" died in the WTC. The so-called "patriot" act takes away our freedom, and spits in the face of all those who died or lost family members on 9/11, people who were exercising their freedoms. You can't get any more patriotic than that. Who cares if it's stopped terrorists? To (once again) quote Benjamin Franklin, "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." I'm willing to take my chances with the possibility of being attacked by terrorists for the sake of preserving our freedom. Those who have nothing to hide may feel they have nothing to worry about. But they aren't free either.
If "our president" (as if it were solely his responsibility - ooh wait, as if he were legitimately our president) can't stop terrorists without the "patriot" act, then I'd have to say he isn't capable of doing his job. And the same goes for all the other portions of our government that really ARE charged with doing so.

I think that people who label themselves - whether it be "party" faithful or idealogues (i.e.; "liberal," "conservative") tend to be the ones wearing blinders.
Independence of thought and belief are discouraged by lemmings who decide that there are absolutes like "Liberals are bad because..." or "GOP is great because..."
I wish people would THINK more and FOLLOW less.
And no, the "Patriot Act" didn't absolutely stop another terrorist attack. But even if it did, the Bushies allowed the biggest one in history to unfold in 2001, so they've still got a lot to make up for.
