I was relocated 3 months ago. The agreement was if I were to leave the company within the 1st yr. I had to reimburse for relo. costs. If they closed down, laid me off, etc. they were responsible for moving me home again. Do I have any recourse if they go back on this agreement. It was verbal, unfortunately, because the owner's word is stronger than paper!

You can argue your case but I think you will have a tough time if you don't have it in writing.

Verbal agreements are hard to prove. Check to see whether you have anything in any contract you signed. Or, if there happened to be a witness to the verbal contract, then said person can be a vital witness. Unless you can prove it, you're SOL. If you can't, then learn from this and apply it to your next position.

When searching for a new job now that you've lost yours, check into whether the hiring company will reimburse you for the move back to where you want to be. Some companies do, others don't, but it's worth looking into and asking.

Talk with the owner and explain your point of view. It may be that the owner will take care of the situation.

It might also help to document this situation with others who had the same situation or witnessed the verbal agreement.

It may be that you just have to accept it as experience.
