There is no age limit. You have to get a permit, though. And you have to build housing for one. Realize to that they require training, LOTS of training. They don't like to be 'held' and you have to be careful what kinds of people you keep them around. Insurance might be a good thing if you think people might meddle their way into an accident with the bird.

They are also expensive, both to buy and to feed. Depending on what kind of raptor you want you may have to order from the UK. They can be in the thousand dollar range (if you want a good bird).

The type of bird you get will also depend on what you're using it for. Hunting is not the only option. Besides all that you'll need at least five acres if you plan on flying the bird.

I was going to go into falconing until I got a book and read about the insane amount of work and money that's involved.

My advise, if you plan on getting birds of prey:
-be very rich
-have lots of spare time
-get an owl to start with. they're more docile and esier to handle. (and cheeper)
-read books!!!!! don't just go buy one because it or you could get hurt.

good luck.

there IS an age limit. where i live its 15 in order to get a permit. When you get your permit, you must become sponsored by another falconer who has birds of prey and can show you better ways to care for raptors. After you get your permit, you are considered an 'apprentice' falconer and like i said you have to have a sponsor. As an apprentice falconer you can only have an American Kestrel or a Red-tailed hawk. you can't obtain these raptors until after August 31, because thats when the birds are out of their nest and migrating for the winter. These birds are called "passage" birds. Most people think taking these birds out of the wild is bad because youre taking them out of their environment, but most of the raptors die before winter from starvation - about 75% of them. And after 2 years of being an apprentice, you then are able to own certain kinds of owls. After about 4 years of that, you are able to own very large raptors, such as eagles. And yes, i suggest you read books about falconry and join some falconry clubs. Hope this helps.

Also depends on the state you live in and what species you are talking about. Some are endangered and illegal to own. Licensed rehabbers are allowed to treat and possess them. In my state, it's even illegal to pick up and keep a feather from certain raptors!

I'm not sure what the age restrictions are, but I do know that there are stringent requirements for licensing. You might want to check out these websites:
