It may be an Alternator but you need to check it out. Do not remove a battery cable while the engine is running. This can cause "Surge" and that can KILL your alternator or damage the computer.
Get your battery tested and the alternator tested before you do any thing else.
Would you get open heart surgery for chest pain only to find out it was gas?

Go to Autozone and get them to hook your battery up to check it once you get the car started. They can tell you what the problem is for free, and if it is the battery or the alternator. It is probably the batter, and you can buy one while at Autozone. They sometimes will help you by installing it. By it not staying charged up, it is probably time for a new one.

this is easy...charge the battery...get the car started..pull the negative battery cable off...if it keeps running it's your battery...if it dies...it's the alternator. the alternator will keep the car running with the battery cable disconnected if it is good...so try this
Good luck

Try charging it up to full power. Then if it's dead again I'd say you have a bad battery.
