Just turn the TV to the History Channel or History International, sit down in a chair of sofa and just watch. If you do not have those channels and have a video or DVD palyer, go to a local library and check out videos or DVDs about history and watch those instead. I think after awhile you will get the hang of it.

A & E
The Documentary Channel
All of these show great documentaries about every subject one can imagine. I never watch anything but these and a few movies, occasionally.

History Channel even has online videos so search History Channel and see what they have. They also have used cd's and vhs from History Channel on amzon.com for cheap

If you are going to watch stuff at home and not be bothered by any one, then you should watch the History Channel, A&E, Biography Channel, and stuff, but if you want to watch videos and dvds, you can get stuff from ebay.com (its really cheap, I get most of my dvd's from there, about $5 per video/dvd), amazon.com,or your local library

TV is iffy and will not lead you to an in depth understanding. Books will. Then you can add TV watching.
