Personally i use wireless and have never used wires on my laptop, but it says that i need a broadband modem. I use dell wireless so i have no wires. There is another thing too. I could use dial-up but there is no where for my cord to hook into my router because all the slots are bigger then the cord.

Well the Netgear is a good router. It connects your DSL or Cable to your network. It does not connect wirelessly to the internet it needs just what it says --- a modem connected to either DSL or Cable.

Once that is connected it will TRANSMIT a wireless signal for your laptop to connect into, but with out an internet connection on the "WAN/INTERNET" plug of the router it is not connected to the internet.

The router routes traffic. To route your computer's traffic to and from the internet, the router needs access to the Internet, either through cable, DSL, satellite, or dial-up. The modem sits between the access point (phone line or cable) and the router to provide the Internet access.

it seem that you are only using the wireless router, right?
if it is a wireless router it won't work, what you nees is a wireless modem/router, or you can combine both, a odem, and then plug the mothem to the router.

telephone---modem---wireless router.

good luck, and i hope it is of help to you.
