Depends I guess on the religion or religious view of the individual. As a Christian, I follow the teachings in the prophecies of the Bible, both in the Old and New Testaments. Jesus, and many of the prophets warned us of the 'Last Days', which is a reference to the days (times and events) that would transpire before the eminent return of Christ to earth!!! Known to students of the Bible as the Second Advent or Second Coming of Christ!
The last days were NOT 1600 years ago, but rather on the Day of Pentacost, when Jesus ascended back to His Father in Heaven, that officially was the start of the Last Days of Mans rule of this planet!!!
Soon there will be NO laughter, to jokes, no teasing, no doubts about whether or not we are indeed in the Last Days, for the fulfillment of the prophecies predicted in the books of Daniel, Isaiah, Micah, the Four Gospels, and Revelation will be so obvious, that NONE will doubt anymore!!!
For instance, we are living in the time when the actual 'mark of the beast' spoken of in Revelation 13:16-18 will come about, since the technology to accomplish such a horrible thing is now here!!! It wasn't 1600 years ago or 160 years ago or even 16 years ago!!!
Its called an RFID, and someday soon, i predict within the next three to seven years, it will be FORCED on the peoples of the world by the antichrist of Revelation 13!

It means that in November of 2008, unless enough people wake up, there is a good chance that
Hillary Clinton might be elected as President
of the United States. That will certainly be the end
of the World as we know it, and the end
of the United States.

This is ASTRONOMY, not religion. Don't you get just a tiny bit skeptical about "Doomsday Prophecies" when their predicted day comes and passes? Or do you cling naively to the notion that after a million guesses as to when the "end of days" will come, somebody might finally get it right.

Science tells us that global annihilation can come from any one of several sources. Anything from our own technology, to a planet-killing asteroid, a wandering black hole, a collision with the Andromeda Galaxy, the death-throes of our own Sun, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

Your question belongs in a different forum.

It means nothing. It is a priest whining "hodie mihi, cras tibi." The world ended on 01 January 1901. The paperwork is all FUBAR.

The Maya End of Time, the filling of the 13th and final baktun in the Long Count, is 21 December 2012. Betelgeus is going supernova. Take Christmas early that year.

Many religions have predicted that the world will end when it is destroyed by one or more gods.

Science tells us that our sun will run out of hydrogen fuel in around 5 billion years and expand to gigantic size, scorching the earth and other inner planets to a crisp.

I'll put my faith in science, because science actually delivers useful results.

Your are so right.

What it means is that humans are so egotistical that they think that a planet that has been around for 4.5 BILLION YEARS will end during THEIR 70 year lifetime.
