you want a series or just a book?
There are a lot of different series in Sci-fi/fantasy... dragonlance, forgotten relms etc. I work in a book store and STILL those series get me confused. but someone who knows their section a little bit more than I do might help you there.
Historical fiction - let's see. Edward Rutherford writes stories set in early England and Irland.

Eragon Trilogy - very good! Possibly a little cliche in the fantasy sense, but still good.
Bartimaeus Trilogy - absolutely hilarious! And very interesting. I guarantee you'll love it. Best of all, the whol trilogy is out, so there won't be any infuriating waits for books to come out.
Uh....this book isn't a series, but it's a good sci-fi-ish type book. You might've heard about it before: Brave New World (people are engineered before birth to do certain things in life, and enjoy doing it)
Maximum Ride! It's a great book, especially for your age, even though you're an advanced reader. It's about kids who have been genetically engineered to fly. Yup, they have wings, and a bunch of other special powers too. It's awesome! And the third book just came out.....3 days ago. :D

The Sword of Truth series by Terri Goodkind.
Harry Potter though you probably don't want to here it.
The Brain Ship series by Anne McCaffery
Well really any series by Anne McCaffery
Mercedes Lackey has some good series
What I do when I want to get involved in a new genre, is get an anthology, a book with lots of short stories written by different authors around central subject.
This gives you a good idea of authors you like, and those who you want to stay away from without going to the expense of buying a book that you don't read.

It's kind of scary that you just described the average Artemis Fowl reader.
The series is by Eoin Colfer. They aren't too long - the hardback edition of the fifth book is about 350 pages - but they are AWESOME. I'm obsessed.
The first book talks a lot about technology, but gradually the jargon gets more and more realistic. Artemis Fowl, Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident, and Artemis Fowl: The Eternity Code (the first three) are being made into movies, and the first movie is scheduled to be released in 2008.

for historical fiction I would reccomend The Other Boleyn Girl followed by the Boleyn Inheritance by Phillipa Gregory. She has also written the Constant Princess, The Queen's Fool(about Bloody Queen Mary), The Virgin's Lover(Elizabeth I).

hmmm. lincoln child and douglas preston write a few series of books that are pretty good. i don't enjoy the books that they write on their own but they are good together.
try relic and then reliquary and see how you like those.
have you read any dean koonts? my favorite book by him of all time is "watchers"
also michael crichton is a great writer. try "timeline" or the jurassic park trilogy.
