He reminds the runners where second base is.

Advises runners when to go for second, what the game situation is (outs, watch for pickoffs). Recovers shin guards and the like. It's not that hard a job.

The first base coach is there to tell the runner what to do. If he should keep running to second base or not. That way the runner doesn't need to look where the ball is, he can just concentrate on running and listen to the coaches direction.

The 1st base coach is to tell the runner that just hit the ball to keep going or to just stay where they are! If the 3rd base coach is yelling from the other side of the feild then the runner may not be able to hear them!
I hope i answered your question.

It's basically tradition. Realistically, there's no real reason for one except that there is a third-base coach, and in the old, old days you needed a coach for reminders of outs and situation. Now, with scoreboards and much more at stake than in the 19th century, it's a leftover part of the game.

Bill Veeck used to use comic Max Patkin as a first base coach once in a while. As Veeck said, it's not like there's much for that coach to do.

While running to first, the runner can't see the third base coach, and must rely on the first base coach to instruct the runner to stop or try and take second.

to time the pitcher's move to home and 1st, hold the batter's item(shin protector, batting gloves, etc) let you know the count and how many outs so you dont have to look back at the scoreboard.
