Rube Goldberg was an inventor and a comic who would create strange contraptions, sometimes out of discards, to do in a very complicated and amusing fashion a simple task........yahoo search him and you'll get a bunch of drawings and plans... say, for an alarm clock, he'd have a mirror which would shine dawns light on a gerbil in a cage who would wake up and run; this would cause a ball to be raised on a geared conveyor belt which would then roll down a ramp, land on a cat which would screach in the sleepers ear....
