I think it's a superb idea. People would love to read it, and your grandfather's memory would be uniquely and elegantly preserved.
Even if the letters are really only about family or personal matters rather than current events, many would still find them interesting and revealing about the thoughts and lifeways of a family or person of that time.

It sounds really interesting. The letters weren't from anyone who could object to them being printed, were they? I don't know the laws about that.
Other than that, I think it's a good idea. There are people who will be interested, even if it may be a select audience. Also, many of your relatives may be thrilled that you took the time to put it all together and want a copies. You may want to give them one or let them pay for their copies, depending on whether they are close or distant relatives. If nothing else, you will learn a lot and be proud of your accomplishment. And you can pass the book on to your children. I treasure the copy of family information about my grandmother and earlier generations that a distant relative had printed long ago.

I can tell you, having worked in a book store for the past 6 months, that people have very diverse interests in books. If you find it interesting, there is no doubt in my mind that someone else out there will share your interest in the subject.
Anne Frank is a VERY popular book. It is (incase you have never read it) her actual diary.
Suite Francais is a book put together by daughters of the author after her death. They found notes and pages of a book she was trying to write during the war.
It's a very popular section of literature.. and Biography is BIG right now too.
Good luck if you decide to go with it.

If the letters are just about family affairs then it will not be so interesting. If there are more things and they give an idea of what was happening at the time it can be very good. Try reading the letters like they were writen by someone unrelated to you and see if you find anything interesting.
