I'm not good at learning by reading, either. Have the book nearby and just plunge in and start working on a picture. Each time you don't know what to do, go to the book. It's slow, but it's the way to learn as you go. Hang in there. Learning new software is tedious but then once you know it, you know it. You'll be photshopping rings around your brother in just a few days!

I hate reading too when it comes to using programs such as photoshop, what I did is just explore the whole program for myself, get a blank white canvas, and just try random buttons. When I get stuck, then I would have no choice but to read. It's the only guide unless you can poke your brother until he will give in. Heheh.
