For budget gaming these are your two cards.

Nvidia 8600 GTS in the $190 to $240 range.
ATI X1950 PRO in the $155 to $200 range.

The absolute best deal for the money right now is the ATI X1950 PRO. It comes in both the PCI-E and AGP interface. I bought one just recently off newegg to replace my aging Nvidia 6800. To say the least I am very impressed by the increased proformance.

The X1950 PRO is almost two years old now. Despite age it performs very closely to the Nvidia 8600 GTS (released two months ago), often beating it out at higher resolutions or with antialiasing enabled, but can be found for as low as $155.

To the Nvidia 8600 GTS advantage is that it employs some newer technologies such as DX10 and Purevideo (improves play of HD video). It is still up in the air as to whether or not the 8600GTS will have the power to play DX10 games or if it's inclusion was just a marketing move by Nvidia.

If you have pci express x8/x16 here are the good price to performance cards. Foxconn geforce 8600gt for $120. Sapphire radeon x1950xt 256mb for $170. Pny geforce 8800gts 320mb for $270. All of these prices are from newegg.com. These are the only cards you should consider if you have pci express x8/x16. The x1950xt is probably the best deal there. If you have agp 4x/8x get an x1950pro, and if you have pci get a new computer.

I am not an avid gamer who needs an expensive card, however, I did just upgrade a video card on my computer because I found one hidden away in the Walmart electronic clearance section for 50% off! So...I recommend checking clearances and sales.
