what would you personally do if this happens in 2009? What do you think would happen on a national/international level if Bush proclaims himself the head of state permanently?

I don't want you cons to get your panties in a bunch, this question is of course, hypothetical.

Are you suggesting he might declare martial law or a state of emergency, and either cancel the 11/08 elections or not cede power to the winner of that election?

Yes, it's a far-fetched idea. Despite the flaws of our two-party system, the advantage it offers is the stability and predictability that permits people to invest in the U.S. with little risk of anything weird happening that would cause a drastic change in laws or regulations.

If, however, Dubya decided that he didn't want to leave office, and he couldn't be persuaded to change his mind, then we would need him to be forceably removed. It would be interesting to see which members of the military and the treasury department (in which the Secret Service resides), as well as other government departments and agencies, choose to follow the constitution and which members choose to follow Bush's orders.

Personally, I doubt I would take up arms and support his removal. I think I would write daily letters to the editors of the local papers, e-mail all my friends and family encouraging them to get involved, and do whatever I could to sway public opinion in favor the constitution.

The laws are now in place for him to suspend or cancel elections should an emergency occur Read the Presidential directive and the Homeland security directive signed into law either May 9th or 18th

An emergency is defined as anything that involves mass American casualties anywhere in the world or something that interferes with the government - or or or

So the idea of Bush very legally suspending elections and not going anywhere is possible

OK the reaction ?

The rest of the world will be nervous but do nothing - A lot of messages of support will be send to Bush - for the "emergency"

A portion of the US population will be against it from the outset - they may be jailed almost immediately - Whoever is involved in the emergency won't have an opinion for a few weeks possibly months -

The majority will quietly grumble and live with it in hopes it will go away quietly .

The people elected to serve in the House's will be extraorinarily scared and that will be the wild card to be played out -

If some reject it and cause a scene it may get ugly - if they go along with it - it may also get ugly -

Well, a president can only serve two terms. If elected, 8yrs. and out. There is no way he could proclaim himself as president. Hypothetically speaking or not. And hypothetically speaking, if he did proclaim himself as president there wouldn't be anything myself or anybody else could do about it. On the national/international level I don't think anything would happen. He would still be president.

Very, very, hypothetical! BUT, what would I do personally? Sit back and watch the news to see what happens, of course. Should I gather up a group of angry renegades to storm the WH?

Doing so would be unconstitutional. If the constitution is suspended, then the constitution's amendment to allow income tax is also suspended. I would tell my employer to stop withholding federal taxes.

Nationally there would probably be demonstations and strikes.

I doubt that there would be much international reaction to this.

LOL, maybe you are too young to remember I don't know, but many people were asking this when Clinton's time was nearing an end too.

If he didn't leave office I would probably just leave the United States, I am so sick of our failed government, our society is crumbling around us and our government is ignoring it. I can't imagine where we will be in 20 years but it scares the heck out of me.

I thought this to be a real possibility if there was a continuation of the Repuke Congress. But now I think it much less likely.

No it's not hypothetical, why don't you read the 'I give me all the power' law?

The problem is first a disaster big-must occur. I'm wondering just how much he wants to be 'big cheese'.

This is the beginning of the latter days if the people can't take back America.

There is a para-military group in our area preparing hard and heavy. They have stocked up on ammo and black market guns. They have stocked up on emergency supplies. I do not know personally what I would do except go to the person's house that I know that is a member of this group.
