What happened and where is Steve?

Steve is indeed a goldfish. Dave, the cat, pawed at the fishbowl knocking it off the side. As it smashed to pieces, he gobbled up Steve with a satisfied grin!
I'll try to think of a more challenging one next time - just for fun!

Steve is, or was, a fish swimming in a bowl of water. Dave, the cat, knocked the bowl off the counter which broke, spilling water and Steve on the floor. Dave ate Steve, hence the smile (of contentment) on his face.

Steve was a fish. Dave is a cat and he knocked the fish bowl over on to the floor and ate Steve.

well, if Steve is a fish and Dave is a cat, Dave ate Steve after breaking the fishtank and then fell asleep happy.
