Pete - I used to be a fan of Newt but something in that last year of being Speaker let me down on his standing. I have heard Tancredo but I think he is too unknown and even though I agree with him on most of his stand on imigration I think he is going to draw some real negatives to a ticket because of those strong views of his. Its sad that strong views now can pull you out of a race. Look at how we select Judiciary candidates now those with a minimal paper trail.

Clk: I think Thommy Thompson is a great candidate. Since I live in the Midwest I have heard of him when he was governor but I am not sure how well know on the coasts. I really hate to even think of Cabinet because this is going to be a tough race for Reps that I rather not worry about other spots till the race is won. Plus if makes me think of the potential disasters the Dems could put in the Cabinet if they won. I really want the Republicans to try to pull Joe Lieberman into the Cabinet if they win the WH so State might be an option for him since he would never take a 2nd level Cabinet spot to give up his Senate seat.

I like Thompson/Romney.....never heard of Portman. A Thompson/Rudy ticket might bring in more socially liberal voters--although it looks like Lieberman may be supporting the GOP this time round--so maybe a ticket to bring in the social liberal independents? Also, what about a Thompson/Thompson ticket? Tommy was a three term governor and head of NIH. Add to it a governor who instituted the model for 1996 welfare reform in his state--which is working!
But you're both right--Gingrich couldn't be on the ticket. He'll have to be Sec of State.

If Fred gets it I am voting for him. Running mate to be in all fairness to our country and our damaged foreign policy the best running mate out there is Bill Richardson, yea I know he's a democrat, but wouldn't it be something, a President who knows what he's doing and a VP that the world likes and respects.

Someone suggested the other day Fred and JC Watts, now I think that would pretty much be an unbeatable ticket.
