Dictionarily (it is one now), fate and destiny mean the same.
I believe, you don't get to make your own fate (it is predetermined and unavoidable) but you can create your own destiny.
Your destiny Paul, is in your own hands.

I've always considered fate to be the bad things that happen in life and destiny to be the good things. Both will happen, but it us up to us whether or not we succumb to fate or strive for our destiny...destiny is not promised without some hard work on our part to make it happen. Nice question :)

Destiny is a pre-determined course of events and Fate is the same thing, but with a more sinister or unfortunate connotation.
