I know the deepest hole ever dug is not very deep at all. In fact, if someone can site that it would be nice.

I have not heard of such a robot. The problem with such an idea is that the robot would not be able to make a tunnel (evacuating soil to the surface), it would have to just move the earth behind it. well RF doesn't go through the earth very well, seriously limiting the range of communication. so drilling (as mentioned) gives a much better insight, and cheaper.

Related though are 'pipe navigating' robots. I've seen articles discussing modifying such robots for cave and mine investigation. might be fun reading
