I generally criticize people when I disagree with their position: something they said, a position they took, information they are sharing. If I disagree with them I try to attack the message and not the person. I hate it when people make childish, elementary school statements about people they disagree with instead of intelligently debating them.
Go on over to the religious/spirituality section of Answers and you will see what I'm talking about. People are posting all sorts of insulting statements and inane questions rather than stating their beliefs or asking legitimate questions to spark debate.
I love Answers when it turns into discussion, not when I need my daily dose of asinine insults thrown at me.
From people's answers I think it is important to define just what you mean by criticism. When I hear it I don't think of bitching or griping (though it surely can degenerate into that), but rather pointing out disagreements and sharing possible solutions or different possible interpretations.
Film critics are supposed to do such a thing: they are supposed to point out the strengths and weaknesses of a film and evaluate how well it achieved it's aims and/or what it adds to the general body of work in it's genre, not just say "I like it" or "It sucks".
I try not to ***** and moan at people, but I do try to offer intelligent discussion and share my views on issues.

I once heard that we criticize people because we see their mistakes/faults in ourselves, and often it's an over-bearing guilt builtup.. and the natural way to vent it out is by criticizing. It's also because some of us are more easily annoyed (or "pet peeveish") than others, and pick up on others faults more scrutingly.
Haha the last time I criticized someone... was my brother an hour ago. I told him to "stop sitting on the computer and just start studying" when I should be doing the exact same thing!

I actually really don't. i mean that isn't to say that I've never done it but I've come to realize, that i must try and understand that person's situation first, be empathic and then judge the situation, not them and then try and give advice rather than spur off at the mouth and hurt someones feelings. My mother and sister do that a lot and it can be hurtful to other pple, so I try and always remember my motto, seek to understand first and then judge because you never know what's going on and to make assumptions or criticize someone because you think you have that right is boorish and stunts emotional maturation. I'm not perfect but when I catch myself I stop and think about how i would feel if i were in that situation and I try to look at all angles before making an opinion first.

Criticizing people is hurtful and pointless. Therefore, i don't do it. I am 15 years old, and the last time that i can really remember doing it was in elementary school, because i didn't know any better. anyone who enjoys criticizing people needs help, and i know people who are like that. those people criticize because they think it is funny.

I criticize people because at times I just don't have anything better to do with my time. The last time I criticized someone must've been yesterday.

I try not to criticize others. And if I must, I try to frame the criticism in a way that won't be too harsh or seem overly critical.

The only time I really criticize people is when I'm at work. And I do it because they're doing something stupidly or wasting time or being fat and ugly. I love criticizing fat ugly people.
