When the Internet was invented in the United States, there were a few domains that were attached to specific uses.
.gov Was for all local, state, and Federal governments.
.mil Was for the US military
.edu Was for all manner of public education.
.org Was for private organizations, usually not-for-profit
.com Was assigned to commerical (for profit) ventures.
As the Internet grew, other nations set up their own domains, such as "es" for Spain (Espana); "uk" United Kingdon; "ca" Canada; "de" for Germany (Deutchland); "it" for Italy; "in" for India, and on and on they go.
The United States is just the most recent to make common use of this type of domain.

Companies use .com, because that identifies them globally as a commercial business.
Ever see a Web address that doesn't end in .com, .org, or .edu? Most likely, the Web site is hosted on a server in another country, or, the origin of business is in another country.
Seeing a .us extension may not necessarily mean the business is in the United States, just that the website is hosted on a U.S. server.

Its the OLDEST of the domains available for commercial use.
.com, .net , .org, .gov etc were the originally used domain extensions..
then many years latter new extensions were issued.. like .us .name, .biz.
Most companies still like .com cause that is what many many internet users became used to hearing seeing using.

.com is short for commercial. This is used for all kinds of business sites just as .gov is a government site and .org is a non-profit or charity site. These are designations used mainly in the U.S.
